Bird Census Conducted in Udaipur, Dungarpur, Rajsamand, and Chittorgarh
On the occasion of Big Bird Day, a large-scale bird census was conducted across five locations in four districts of Rajasthan—Udaipur, Dungarpur, Rajsamand, and Chittorgarh. The initiative was organized by WWF-India, which has been actively working towards the conservation of birds and wildlife.

An Insightful Bird Counting Initiative
Arun Soni, Divisional Officer of WWF-India Udaipur, shared that the annual Big Bird Day Bird Count aims to document bird diversity and collect valuable data on avian species. This year, bird enthusiasts and experts participated across multiple cities, making significant observations.
Key Findings Across Various Locations
Udaipur (Jogi Talab): A team led by bird experts Vinay Dave, Sharad Agarwal, Hitesh Shrimali, and bird enthusiasts Deepal Kalra, Manjari Arya, Dr. Trisha Singh, and Vivek Bulia recorded 87 bird species. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 62 bird lovers, along with a quiz competition where winners were felicitated.
Rajsamand (Irrigation Garden): The team, including Himanshu Singh, Narendra Paliwal, and Narayan Singh, documented 84 bird species in their checklist.
Chittorgarh:
- Bhupalsagar: Under the leadership of Ujjwal Dadhich, the team recorded 32 bird species.
- Bird Sanctuary Badwai: A team led by Pukhraj Trivedi, Bheru Lal Shrimali, Kamal Shrimali, Nakshatramal Ahir, Pushkar Ahir, Omprakash Shrimali, and Nakul Shrimali documented 47 species.
Dungarpur (Sagwara, Govt. Veer Bala Kalibai Campus): The census, led by Mukesh Panwar, along with Pankaj Swarnkar, Venika Panwar, Kailash Rot, and school principal Bharat Ji Patidar, saw the active participation of over 80 students and resulted in 35 species being recorded.
Notable Bird Species Observed
During the bird count, a diverse array of migratory and native bird species were observed, including:
- Imperial Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Egyptian Vulture
- Crested Bunting, Black Redstart, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Bronze-winged Jacana
- Black-tailed Godwit, Garganey, Common Coot, Common Teal, Comb Duck
- Common Snipe, Little Ringed Plover, Black-winged Stilt, Spot-billed Duck
- Pied Kingfisher, River Tern, Heron, Openbill Stork, Cormorant
- Lesser Whistling Duck, Grey-headed Swamphen, White-naped Tit
- White-throated Kingfisher, Coppersmith Barbet, Indian Grey Hornbill
- Taiga Flycatcher, Small Minivet, and many more.
