New Delhi, August 9 (Udaipur Kiran) – Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has won a bronze medal in wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024. Aman secured the bronze by defeating Puerto Rico’s Darian Toy Cruz with a score of 13-5 in the match held on Friday. The 21-year-old wrestler had shown impressive performance in the pre-quarterfinal and quarterfinal rounds on Thursday but was defeated in the semifinals of the men’s 57 kg freestyle category by Japan’s top-seeded Rei Higuchi in a one-sided match. So far, India has won a total of six medals at the Paris Olympics, including five bronze and one silver.
Aman led 6-3 in the first round and extended his lead in the second round, giving Cruz no chance to make a comeback. With this victory, Aman Sehrawat has continued India’s medal streak in wrestling at the Olympics. He was the only male wrestler representing India at the Paris Olympics and managed to uphold the nation’s tradition of winning wrestling medals.
Since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, India has won a wrestling medal in every Olympic Games. Sushil Kumar won bronze in 2008, silver in 2012 along with Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze, Sakshi Malik won bronze in 2016, and in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Ravi Dahiya secured silver and Bajrang Punia won bronze. This was Aman’s first Olympic appearance, and he marked it with a bronze medal, opening India’s account in wrestling at the Paris Olympics. His victory brought joy to the country, especially after the disappointment of Vinesh Phogat being declared ineligible.
