Imam Arrested in West Bengal Over Terror Links
The NIA has arrested an imam in East Bardhaman, West Bengal, suspected of connections to a terrorist network.

East Bardhaman, September 29 (Udaipur Kiran) : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested an imam in East Bardhaman district of West Bengal on suspicion of links to a terrorist network. The imam, identified as Mohammad Sheikh, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning from the Purba Para mosque in Palishgram, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mangalkot police station.
Sheikh, originally from the nearby village of Kulut in the Monteswar area, was apprehended during an operation conducted in coordination with local police. Authorities searched Sheikh’s room and reportedly found a diary and a mobile phone.
Sources indicate that the diary contained several contact numbers linked to individuals in Bangladesh. Following his arrest, Sheikh was taken to the Mangalkot police station for questioning, where NIA officials are working to gather more information.
Local residents expressed surprise at Sheikh’s arrest, noting that he had been associated with the mosque for the past three years. Many could not fathom his potential connections to terrorist groups in Bangladesh. However, members of the mosque committee, including Ghulam Mustafa, mentioned that Sheikh frequently traveled to Bangladesh.
One villager revealed, “He had recently gone to Bangladesh and spent nearly six months there, returning to Palishgram just a few months ago.” The NIA is investigating alleged sleeper cells of the Bangladesh-based terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), and this operation is linked to a case registered in the neighboring state of Assam.
