New Delhi, January 1 (Udaipur Kiran): An Air India pilot was taken into custody by Canadian authorities at Vancouver Airport after being suspected of being under the influence of alcohol just before operating a scheduled flight to India. The incident occurred on December 23, shortly before Flight AI-186 was set to depart for Delhi.
According to sources, a staff member at a duty-free store raised concerns after noticing the pilot’s condition and alerted airport authorities. Following this, officials conducted a breath analyser test, in which the pilot reportedly failed. He was subsequently detained by local authorities for further questioning.
In an official statement, Air India confirmed the incident, stating that the pilot was removed from duty due to “fitness-related concerns” raised by Canadian authorities. The airline clarified that the pilot was taken off the flight prior to departure, which led to a delay in the scheduled operation. Another pilot was immediately assigned to operate the flight.
The airline further stated that the pilot has been grounded pending the outcome of the investigation. Emphasising passenger safety as its top priority, Air India said that strict action would be taken if any violation of safety or operational protocols is established.
The matter is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities in Canada.
