Mumbai, 01 January (Udaipur Kiran) – Nearly 98.41 percent of the ₹2000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation have been returned to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) so far.
The central bank shared this update in a press release on Thursday. It stated that the decision to withdraw the ₹2000 notes was announced on 19 May 2023, when notes worth ₹3.56 lakh crore were in circulation.
As of 31 December 2023, the value of these notes in circulation dropped to ₹5,669 crore, indicating that 98.41 percent of the notes have been returned to the RBI.
The release also mentioned that until 7 October 2023, people were allowed to deposit or exchange these ₹2000 notes at bank branches.
After this date, individuals can return the notes directly to RBI issue offices either in person or through India Post, by depositing them into their bank accounts.
