South Gujarat Set for Economic Leap: JP Nadda

Surat, May 3: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda stated on Saturday that South Gujarat’s emergence as a manufacturing hub reflects the state’s overall economic strength and its ability to transform challenges into opportunities. He was addressing the closing session of the two-day Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) held at the Auro University in Surat.

Nadda remarked that the conference has laid the foundation for a significant economic leap for the region in the coming years. Highlighting regional strengths, he noted that Surat’s diamond and textile industries, along with the chemical and fertilizer clusters in Bharuch, Dahej, and Ankleshwar, have developed into global centers.

He mentioned that the textile industry is now connecting with tribal areas, opening new avenues for development for local communities, which will be a crucial step for both the region and the state. Praising Gujarat’s economic performance, Nadda pointed out that the state contributes approximately 8% to India’s GDP, 17% to manufacturing output, 27% to merchandise exports, and 40% to total goods transportation.

He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Gujarat has evolved into a globally connected and competitive economic engine. Referring to policy changes, he noted that before 2003, there was a gap between entrepreneurs and the government, but the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ initiative launched by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi fostered a culture of dialogue and collaboration.

Nadda emphasized that this model has become an example for other states, helping India emerge as one of the most reliable destinations for global investment. Stressing the need to strengthen manufacturing capacity amid global uncertainties, he highlighted how Gujarat has demonstrated the ability to turn adversities into opportunities through projects like the Statue of Unity, GIFT City, and high-speed rail.
