Kolkata, May 2 (Udaipur Kiran): The Election Commission has cancelled voting in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly seat following reports of EVM malfunction and violence during polling held on April 29.
The Commission has directed fresh polling across all 285 booths in the constituency on May 21, while counting of votes will take place on May 24. The decision comes after complaints of irregularities, including an incident where tape was allegedly found placed over the BJP button on an EVM. There were also reports of ink marks on the BJP button at a polling booth.
Earlier, re-polling was conducted on Saturday in 11 booths of Magrahat West and four booths of Diamond Harbour Assembly segments. According to reports, nearly 90 percent voting was recorded across these 15 booths.
Clashes were also reported in South 24 Parganas between workers of TMC and BJP, where security forces intervened to control the situation. In Falta, some voters alleged that they were attacked by TMC workers after casting their votes. They also claimed that police resorted to lathi-charge when they protested, resulting in injuries to several individuals.
Meanwhile, TMC alleged that security personnel vandalised their camp and assaulted workers at booth number 127 in Magrahat.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing counting agents through video conferencing on Saturday, expressed confidence that her party would secure victory in more than 200 seats.
