Afghanistan Earthquake: Death Toll Crosses 2,200, Relief Supplies Running Short

Kabul/Mazar Dara, September 5 (Kiran News) — A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, hitting the same region devastated by Sunday’s massive quake that has already claimed more than 2,200 lives. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the tremor had a depth of 10 kilometres.

Sunday’s 6.0-magnitude quake, followed by a 5.5 aftershock on Tuesday, left villages in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces in ruins. So far, at least 2,205 deaths and over 3,640 injuries have been confirmed. More than 6,700 houses have collapsed, and aid groups warn the toll could rise further as many remain trapped under debris.

Relief agencies have sounded alarm over severe shortages of food, medicine, and shelter. The Red Cross reported that nearly 84,000 people have been directly or indirectly affected. According to Islamic Relief Worldwide, in some villages in Kunar province, two out of every three people have either been killed or injured, while 98 percent of buildings are damaged.

Scenes of devastation continue across affected districts, with residents digging through rubble in search of family members. Bodies are being carried on makeshift stretchers, while many survivors remain in the open, too fearful to return indoors due to repeated aftershocks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted a funding shortfall of USD 3 million, hampering supplies of medicines and essential medical aid. The World Food Programme (WFP) said its resources would only last four weeks for the affected population.

The Norwegian Refugee Council urged global donors not only to provide emergency relief but also to support long-term efforts to secure the future of Afghan communities.
