Islamabad : At least 17 people were killed and 40 others injured when a truck carrying pilgrims plunged into a deep ravine in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, officials said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night when the truck was en route to the Shah Noorani shrine with around 50 people on board, Dawn reported, citing a police official.
The rescue operation concluded on Thursday morning, according to Manan Baloch, the Hub head of the Edhi Foundation.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. He has directed the authorities to provide better medical facilities to the injured.
Accidents are common in Pakistan due to a lack of adequate safety measures, insufficient driver training, and aging transportation infrastructure.
According to a WHO estimate, over 27,000 people were killed in road accidents in Pakistan in 2018.
