United Nations, October 6 (Udaipur Kiran) : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks approaches. In a message released ahead of the anniversary, Guterres emphasized that the horrors of those attacks should never be repeated and insisted that the ongoing conflict in Gaza must come to an end.
The attacks, carried out by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 others. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation against Hamas in Gaza. According to the Xinhua news agency, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 74,000 Palestinians.
Guterres stated, “The devastating conflict that began after the attacks has caused immeasurable pain and suffering for the people of Gaza. Many lives have been lost, people have been displaced, and widespread destruction has occurred. Ordinary citizens are still facing extremely difficult conditions. Their suffering must also come to an end.”
While acknowledging that last year’s ceasefire provided some relief, he noted that the people have yet to receive full security, adequate humanitarian assistance, or a reliable path to improve their circumstances and establish peace.
He urged all parties involved to fully commit to their obligations and move towards the next phase of a ceasefire. “Now is the time to make the ceasefire permanent. It is also time to allow large-scale humanitarian assistance to reach those in need and to respect international law,” he said.
Guterres highlighted the need for a political path to achieve lasting peace in the region. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to these goals, stating, “Let this anniversary not just symbolize another year of grief and mourning, but strengthen our resolve to create a different future—one where Israelis and Palestinians can live as neighbors in peace and security, with their rights, dignity, and aspirations fulfilled.”
The October 7 attacks led to significant casualties in Israel, prompting extensive military operations across Gaza, which have resulted in over 74,200 deaths, according to health officials in the region.
