New Delhi, February 23: Poor dietary habits and irregular routines can negatively impact health, leading to an increase in digestive issues. Yoga and asanas can help maintain a healthy body, and one such asana is Udarakarshanasana, which aids in relieving problems like constipation, gas, indigestion, bloating, and acidity.
Udarakarshanasana is an important yoga posture, particularly beneficial for the lower abdomen, digestive system, and spine health. Additionally, it plays a role in detoxifying the body. The term ‘Udar’ means ‘abdomen’ and ‘akarshana’ means ‘to pull’ or ‘to contract.’ This traditional yoga practice involves applying specific pressure and stretching to the abdomen, activating and strengthening the digestive system.
The Ministry of AYUSH has also highlighted its significance. According to the ministry, Udarakarshanasana is primarily helpful in strengthening abdominal muscles, alleviating constipation, and improving digestion. This asana stimulates the apana vayu and provides relief from pain in the lower abdomen and lower back.
Practicing this asana is quite simple. To perform it, sit in a squatting position on a yoga mat, keeping a distance of about one to one and a half feet between your feet. Place your palms on your knees. As you exhale deeply, place your right knee on the ground near the toes of your left foot while keeping your left knee upright, and turn your head as far to the left as possible.
By practicing this asana for just 5-10 minutes daily, you can keep your abdomen healthy and light. However, individuals with ulcers, hernias, severe back pain, or those who have recently undergone surgery should consult a doctor before attempting this asana.
