Government Earns ₹4,405 Crore from Scrap Sales Since 2021

New Delhi, February 23: The government announced on Monday that under the cleanliness campaign, it has earned a total of ₹4,405.28 crore from scrap sales between 2021 and January 2026.

According to the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), ₹200.21 crore was generated from scrap disposal during December 2025 to January 2026, while in January, 81,322 files were sorted across 5,188 offices as part of the cleanliness initiative.

The department stated that the 27th edition of ‘Secretariat Reforms’ provides a detailed analysis of ongoing initiatives aimed at transforming governance and administration.

In January, successful cleanliness drives were conducted at 5,188 locations nationwide, resulting in the clearance of approximately 4.34 lakh square feet of office space, significantly contributed by the Ministry of Coal (188,687 square feet) and the Ministry of Heavy Industries (62,129 square feet).

Last month, ₹115.85 crore was earned from scrap disposal, with significant contributions from the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Heavy Industries, and Ministry of Coal.

A report indicated that under effective record management, 182,000 physical files were reviewed, of which 81,322 were deemed unnecessary. Additionally, 557,852 public grievances were addressed, accounting for 90.41% of total complaints, along with the resolution of 1,032 references related to Members of Parliament and 375 state government references.

It further noted that adopting the initiative to reduce the number of files has led to a significant decrease in the average transaction level for active files, dropping from 7.19 in 2021 to 4.31 by January 2026.

Of the total files created in January 2026, approximately 93.81% were e-files. Among the receipts received, about 95.29% were e-receipts, with 65 ministries/departments adopting at least 90% e-files at a significant level.

On January 26, fifteen ministries/departments achieved 100% participation in e-receipts.
