New Delhi, February 17: Anemia, characterized by fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath, can significantly impact daily life. To combat this condition, it is essential to incorporate iron-rich foods into your diet. Regular consumption of nutritious items such as spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, dates, jaggery, black chickpeas, kidney beans, and lentils can help maintain energy levels and prevent blood deficiency.
The National Health Mission has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to eliminate anemia, emphasizing the message, “Defeat Anemia, Embrace a Healthy Life.” This condition is particularly common among women, children, and pregnant women, leading to various health issues, including fatigue and developmental delays in children. However, with the right diet, regular check-ups, and increased awareness, anemia can be effectively managed.
To prevent anemia, it is crucial to consume a balanced diet rich in iron, vitamin C, and protein daily. Iron is vital for the formation of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen in the blood. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption in the body, while protein is essential for repair and growth.
Foods high in iron include leafy greens (spinach, fenugreek, mustard greens), legumes (kidney beans, soybeans, black chickpeas), and fruits like pomegranate and dates. Additionally, vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables (amla, lemon, oranges, guava, kiwi, tomatoes, bell peppers) should be included, along with protein sources such as lentils, milk, yogurt, paneer, and seeds (almonds, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds).
Experts recommend pairing iron-rich meals with vitamin C fruits or lemon to enhance iron absorption. It is advisable to avoid tea or coffee immediately after meals, as they can hinder iron absorption. Regular hemoglobin checks every 3-6 months are recommended, and pregnant women and adolescents should consult a doctor regarding iron supplements.
