‘Mandawar becomes second liquor free village in Raj’
Udaipur : Mandawar village in Bhim tehsil of Rajsamand district is second one to become alcohol free village of the state. The referendum on Saturday saw 59.86 % of voters demanding the shut down of liquor shop in the area. Of the total registered 2711 voters, 1779 participated in the poll. Among these 1623 people voted in favour of the liquor ban while 111 voted against the motion, 55 votes were rejected.
” This is the victory of women folks in the village. Being the worst effected financially and emotionally by alcohol consumption, women in the village had participated in the effective campaigns that had been held for more than two years” said Sarpanch Pyari Devi Rawat, who spearheaded the campaign. Women had been rallying for long demanding alcohol ban. They had staged dharnas and initiated the referendum procedure some 8 months ago, however,residents had to wait long to get the verification process complete and finally polling to be conducted by the excise department. Inspired by the Kachhbali success, the villagers were determined to repeat history.
However, they had even seen the failure met by their neighbours in Barjal village who had failed in getting the motion passed, last year. ” We made teams which went door-to-door to sensitize people on the ill-effects of boozing. Even a mock poll was held were illiterate people specially women were taught how to caste their vote” Pyari Devi told Udaipur Kiran. On Saturday voting was held between 8 to 5 pm at the Atal Sewa Kendra. Turnout of female voters was high as expected and women came in groups to cast their votes. According tovillagers there are some 700 people who live in other cities in connection to their work and labour. All suchpeople were also contacted by the gram panchayat and were asked to attend the polling. Besides door campaigns, villagers had also resorted to socialmedia to spread awareness.
