Weather Set to Worsen — IMD Issues Alerts for Cold Wave and Heavy Rain

New Delhi (Udaipur Kiran). The weather across the country is changing rapidly, with cold conditions intensifying and rain likely in several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts as a low-pressure area persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, accompanied by cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere.

Weather

According to the IMD, Tamil Nadu is expected to receive light to moderate rain from 18 to 23 November, with isolated heavy showers in some places. Kerala and Mahe may experience rain between 20 and 23 November. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive rain on 18 November, while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall from 19 to 22 November, along with thunderstorms and lightning.

Cold Wave Conditions Grip North, Central and East India

Several plains in north-west, central and eastern India are reporting minimum temperatures 2–4°C below normal. Parts of west Madhya Pradesh may experience cold wave conditions on 18–19 November, with isolated areas affected on 20–21 November. Eastern Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Marathwada, Telangana and Vidarbha may also see cold wave conditions from 18 to 20 November. Fishermen have been advised to avoid affected sea regions from 18 to 22 November.

Cold Wave Alert in Odisha

The IMD has issued a cold wave warning for Bhubaneswar and four districts in Odisha. Udayagiri recorded 5.4°C on Monday, the lowest in the state. A yellow alert has been issued for Jharsuguda, Khordha, Sundargarh and Kandhamal districts until Tuesday morning. Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Angul are also experiencing cold wave-like conditions. Minimum temperatures remain 5–7°C below normal across many regions, severely affecting daily life.

Seven Districts in Jharkhand Under Alert

Cold wave warnings have been issued for seven districts of Jharkhand, where temperatures have fallen to 10°C or below in several areas. A yellow alert is in place for Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega districts until Tuesday morning. On Monday, Gumla recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 6.6°C, followed by 7.6°C in Lohardaga. Ranchi recorded 10.2°C, which is 2.9°C below normal.

The IMD says the temperature drop is due to north-westerly winds. With easterly winds expected to enter the region, partial relief from the cold is likely from Tuesday as moisture from the Bay of Bengal moves inland. Minimum temperatures may rise by 3–4°C over the next three days before stabilising.
