Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Hits 180 km/h During Trial Run, Set to Revolutionize Long-Distance Travel

New Delhi, January 3  – The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, India’s latest high-speed rail marvel, has achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching a maximum speed of 180 km/h during multiple trial runs over the past three days. The Ministry of Railways confirmed that trials will continue throughout January, after which this world-class long-distance travel solution will be officially introduced for public use.

Successful Trial Run in Kota Division

During a trial run between Kota and Laban in Rajasthan’s Bundi district, the train clocked 180 km/h over a 30-kilometer stretch, demonstrating its high-speed capabilities. On January 1, 2025, another trial run conducted between Rohal Khurd and Kota over 40 kilometers also recorded a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Additional trials on the Kota-Nagda and Rohal Khurd-Chaumahela sections witnessed the train reaching speeds of 170 km/h and 160 km/h, respectively.

Sharing a video of the trial on social media, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the stability of the train even at high speeds. The video showcased a glass of water placed beside a mobile phone inside the speeding train, with the water remaining perfectly still, indicating minimal vibrations and ensuring passenger comfort.

State-of-the-Art Features of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is designed to offer unparalleled comfort and convenience for long-distance travelers. Key features include:

  • Automatic doors for enhanced safety and ease of access.
  • Luxurious and ergonomic berths for a comfortable overnight journey.
  • Onboard Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected.
  • Aircraft-inspired interiors, providing a modern and premium travel experience.

According to the ministry, this sleeper version will complement the existing 136 Vande Bharat trains, which are already providing world-class travel experiences on short and medium-distance routes.

Focus on Long-Distance Connectivity

The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is part of Indian Railways’ broader vision to transform long-distance rail travel across the country. Currently, the fastest trains on long-distance routes, such as the Tejas Rajdhani Express, operate at an average speed of 90 km/h with a peak speed of 140 km/h. The new Vande Bharat sleeper trains, capable of reaching 180 km/h, will drastically reduce travel time on major routes like:

  • Delhi-Mumbai
  • Howrah-Chennai
  • Kashmir-Kanyakumari

Passengers can expect a significant reduction in journey durations, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable travel across India’s vast rail network.

Challenges and Achievements

One of the biggest challenges faced by the Indian Railways was integrating berths into the Vande Bharat design while ensuring the train’s stability at high speeds with full passenger and luggage load. With the recent successful trials, the ministry is confident that these challenges have been addressed. The final stage will involve an evaluation by the Railway Safety Commissioner, who will certify the train for regular operations.

Setting a New Benchmark in Indian Rail Travel

The Vande Bharat series has already established itself as a symbol of modern Indian engineering, offering a seamless blend of speed and comfort. Initially connecting key short and medium-distance routes, such as Delhi-Varanasi, these trains have redefined train travel in India. With the upcoming sleeper version, Indian Railways is set to extend this luxury and speed to longer routes, providing millions of passengers with a world-class travel experience.

Speaking on the initiative, a senior railway official said, “Our goal is to offer faster, safer, and more comfortable rail journeys to Indian citizens. After successfully modernizing short and medium-distance travel, we are now focused on revolutionizing long-distance travel.”
