Understanding the Constitution Is Key to Justice: D.R. Ohol

Udaipur, November 27 (Udaipur Kiran): National President of the Bharatiya Karmchari Sangh, New Delhi, D.R. Ohol said that the Constitution can be protected only when people understand it. He said that as long as social and economic equality is not achieved, society will continue to face distrust, prejudice, tension and conflict. He stressed that governments must focus on the working class which is still suffering from backwardness.

Ohol was addressing the 76th Constitution Day programme as the chief speaker at the New Auditorium of MB Hospital. The event was jointly organised by the Constitutional Rights Public Awareness Institute along with Sarv Bahujan, Moolnivasi, Tribal, Backward and Minority organisations. The chief guest of the programme was retired IAS officer Tarachand Meena. The session was presided over by the organisation’s founder president Ganesh Lal Raykwal, who welcomed all guests and participants. He said that earlier governments never thought about celebrating Constitution Day, but now even governments are being compelled to take notice because of such organisations. Prof. Sudha Choudhary delivered the inaugural address.

At the beginning, organisation president Ganesh Lal Raykwal, vice-president Sukh Sampat Bagdi, general secretary Babulal Ghawari, treasurer Ambalal Salvi, coordinator Prof. Amos Meena and media in-charge Advocate P.R. Salvi welcomed the guests. Advocate P.R. Salvi read out the Preamble of the Constitution. The programme began with floral tribute and candle lighting before the portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Addressing the gathering, Ohol said the backwardness of the working class is the result of people failing to understand and properly implement the Constitution. He said it was unfortunate that since 1950, the Constitution has remained in the hands of those who were themselves opposed to it, with only political faces changing. He said Dr. Ambedkar framed the Constitution with three main objectives — abolition of untouchability, creation of a governing class among the oppressed, and establishment of justice, liberty, equality, fraternity and scientific temper. He added that although Dr. Ambedkar restored the rights of the working class through the Constitution, even today they have not achieved political and economic equality. He warned people not to be misled by politics and said that injustice would continue as long as people do not read and understand the Constitution themselves.

Prof. Sudha Choudhary said that Dr. Ambedkar fought alone and the struggle he undertook must be remembered by the present generation. She said he taught the working class how to live with dignity and gifted a document that fulfilled the dreams of millions. She added that today there is a need to understand hypocrisy and feudalism.

National Bahujan campaigner Rais Malik said people must now understand the true power of one vote, which gives equal value and power to both the richest and the poorest citizen. He said the Constitution can be saved only through the power of voting, but unfortunately the Bahujan community is weakening itself by sending people to Parliament who are a threat to the Constitution. CPI-ML secretary Shankarlal Choudhary said it was unfortunate that programmes even need to be organised on the subject on which the country itself is run. Chief guest Tarachand Meena stressed the need for united resistance against anti-Constitution forces and said that such forces would continue to rule as long as people remain divided.

Several social workers, scholars and representatives from city and rural areas attended the programme. The event was conducted by general secretary Babulal Ghawari and coordinator Amos Meena, while the vote of thanks was given by Sukh Sampat Bagdi Meena.
