Tragedy in Madhya Pradesh: Seven Dead, One Missing After Well Cleaning in Khandwa Post-Gangaur Visarjan

Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh – April 3, 2025: A heartbreaking incident occurred in Kondawat village under the Chaigaonmakhan police station area of Khandwa district, where eight individuals fell into a well while cleaning it following Gangaur festival idol immersion. So far, seven bodies have been recovered, while one person remains missing. The tragedy is suspected to have been caused by the accumulation of toxic gases such as methane or hydrogen sulfide within the well due to stagnant waste.

What Happened?

According to local authorities, after the Gangaur festival immersion rituals, villagers began cleaning the well located in the village square. During this process, several people entered the well to remove idol debris and silt that had collected at the bottom. When the men didn’t resurface for several hours, concerned locals alerted the police and district administration.

Rescue Operation Underway

Upon receiving the report, teams from the police, district administration, SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and Home Guards rushed to the spot. A 15-member SDRF rescue team initiated an intensive operation, working in tandem with local villagers to retrieve the individuals trapped inside.

Khandwa Collector Rishav Gupta and Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai were present at the scene, coordinating the efforts. Collector Gupta stated, “Preliminary findings suggest the presence of poisonous gases in the well, likely generated by organic waste after the immersion. This could have caused the victims to lose consciousness and drown.”

The victims are believed to have included two members from the same family. So far, seven of the eight people who entered the well have been declared deceased.

The individuals involved in the tragedy have been identified as:

• Rakesh, son of Hari

• Vasudev, son of Asaram

• Arjun, son of Govind

• Gajanand, son of Gopal

• Mohan, son of Mansaram

• Ajay, son of Mohan

• Sharan, son of Sukh Ram

• Anil, son of Atmaram (still missing)

Eyewitness Account

An eyewitness, Gopichand Patel, shared that one person initially entered the well and when he didn’t return, others jumped in to help him, leading to a chain reaction in which all eight individuals became trapped. The rescue operation is ongoing with hopes of retrieving the remaining person.

The state administration has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and has urged people to avoid entering confined or poorly ventilated wells without safety measures. The tragedy has cast a pall of mourning over the village, which had just concluded a major religious celebration.
