Wayanad, July 31 (Udaipur Kiran): The catastrophic floods that struck Wayanad, Kerala early on July 30 have left the nation in shock. Today marks the last day of the two-day mourning period declared by Kerala. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the three villages devastated by the floodwaters, with the number of casualties increasing by the hour. According to the Kerala Health Department, 143 bodies have been recovered so far.
Wayanad, a hilly district in Kerala, experienced torrential rains that triggered two landslides within a few hours in the Wayanad taluka. The landslides buried three villages, and the floodwaters swept away residents. Authorities have recovered 25 mutilated bodies from the Chaliyar River near the Potukallu area in the neighboring Malappuram district and four from Choorlamala in Wayanad.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that extensive rescue operations by state and central forces are underway in Mundakkai, Choorlamala, and Attamala. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
The Kerala government reported that the floods originating from the Iravanipuzha river have engulfed the three villages located six kilometers away. The initial landslide at 2 AM blocked the villagers’ escape routes, and further devastation occurred at 4:10 AM when the floodwaters altered the river’s course.
Chief Minister Vijayan noted that the Chooramala bridge spanning Iravanipuzha was destroyed during the landslide. Hundreds of survivors have been relocated to safe areas. Vijayan also reported that the region has received 578 millimeters of rainfall in the past 48 hours.
