Ahmedabad, March 9: India clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title under the captaincy of Surya Kumar Yadav. Following this victory, Surya expressed his confidence in the abilities of his players. He also praised Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah for their outstanding performances.
In the final match held at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, India scored 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, thanks to remarkable innings from Sanju Samson (89), Abhishek Sharma (52), and Ishan Kishan (54). In response, New Zealand was bowled out for just 159 runs in 19 overs, giving India a resounding victory by 96 runs.
After becoming the third captain to lead India to a T20 World Cup title, Surya Kumar Yadav stated, “It has been a long journey. It started after the T20 World Cup 2024. Jay Shah and Rohit Sharma trusted me and gave me the opportunity to lead the team. From there, this long journey began, and winning the trophy here is fantastic. We have been playing good cricket over the past two years, and we just wanted to continue those good cricketing habits that we had in the 2024 World Cup. The players embraced it very well.”
Regarding maintaining trust in his players, Captain Surya emphasized, “It is very important to understand what players are capable of. I knew they had the potential to win matches. They performed brilliantly at the right time. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are excellent players, and we knew they would do something special, and they did just that in the final.”
In the title match, Jasprit Bumrah took 4 wickets for just 15 runs in his 4 overs. Throughout the tournament, Bumrah played 8 matches, taking 14 wickets at an average of 12.43. Surya praised him, saying, “Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler. I can call him a national treasure. He knows exactly what to do and is the best at his job.”
