Manheim Township, Pennsylvania – A Close Call Near Lancaster Airport

A Beechcraft Bonanza carrying five people crashed in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, just moments after departing Lancaster Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The small aircraft went down near a retirement village in Manheim Township, causing a 100-foot skid upon impact, local authorities confirmed. Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured.
Emergency responders swiftly transported all five passengers to Lancaster General Hospital, where trauma teams were prepared to administer care. Three critically injured individuals were later transferred to Lehigh Valley Health Network’s burn center, two via PennSTAR medical helicopter and one by ground ambulance. As of Sunday night, two passengers remain hospitalized at Lancaster General.
Distress Call Before the Crash
According to Air Traffic Control (ATC) audio recordings, the pilot reported an open door shortly after takeoff and requested an emergency return to the airport.
🎙️ Pilot to ATC: “We have an open door, we need to return for landing.”
🎙️ ATC Clearance: The control tower granted permission for the return.
🎙️ Final Command: Moments later, the controller urgently instructed the pilot to “pull up,” just before the crash occurred.
Flames, Smoke, and Immediate Response
Eyewitness images shared with ABC News captured thick smoke and flames rising from the wreckage in Lititz, Manheim Township.
🚒 First responders, state police, and emergency crews quickly arrived at the crash site, securing the area and ensuring no further risk to the surrounding community.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the ongoing response, posting on X.com:
“Our team at @PAStatePolice is on the ground assisting local first responders following the small private plane crash near Lancaster Airport in Manheim Township. All Commonwealth resources are available as the response continues.”
FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation
The FAA has confirmed it will conduct a full-scale investigation, alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is closely monitoring the situation. Officials will examine flight data, maintenance records, and potential mechanical failures that may have contributed to the crash.
At this stage, the cause of the crash remains unclear, though investigators will focus on the reported door malfunction and last-minute emergency maneuvers.
Aviation Safety: A Growing Concern?
The Beechcraft Bonanza, a single-engine aircraft popular for private flights, has a strong safety record. However, mechanical failures and pilot errors can still lead to tragic outcomes. This incident adds to a string of recent small-plane accidents, raising renewed aviation safety concerns.
With a federal probe now underway, authorities aim to determine the exact cause and implement any necessary safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the survivors continue receiving medical care, more details on the crash, the pilot’s final moments, and the plane’s condition are expected in the coming days.
