Kolkata, April 4, 2025 — Residents of South Bengal should brace for heavy rain and thunderstorms today, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for adverse weather conditions across the region. Kolkata and surrounding districts woke up to overcast skies on Friday, and weather experts predict intermittent rainfall accompanied by strong winds throughout the day.

Cyclonic Systems Fuel Weather Shift in Bengal
According to IMD meteorologists, multiple cyclonic systems active across the Indian subcontinent are responsible for the current weather patterns in Bengal. Cyclones near Jammu & Kashmir and Assam, along with additional systems near North Bengal, Bangladesh, central Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the southeastern Arabian Sea, are influencing the state’s climate.
These overlapping systems have caused a significant shift in weather conditions across South Bengal, leading to increased humidity and widespread cloud cover. The IMD confirms that gusty winds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph are expected to sweep through the region, intensifying the impact of the downpours.
Rain and Thunder Expected Across South Bengal
The IMD’s forecast indicates that all districts in South Bengal will witness thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall today. Cities like Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, South and North 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and Bankura are likely to experience wet and stormy conditions throughout the day.
Additionally, western districts may continue to experience higher temperatures, adding to the discomfort from humid conditions.
The weather department warns of similar stormy conditions from Monday to Thursday, with periodic rainfall and thunderstorms expected to persist in most parts of South Bengal.
North Bengal to See Stable Weather Initially
While the southern region of the state faces turbulent weather, North Bengal will remain comparatively stable through the weekend. However, rainfall is forecasted from Monday through Thursday, with isolated showers predicted in Darjeeling on Sunday.
Strong winds and thunderstorms could affect the entire North Bengal region by Tuesday, with the stormy weather likely to continue until Thursday, according to meteorological updates.
