Raising Public Awareness Key to Human Rights Protection: Justice R.C.S. Jhala

Udaipur : A seminar marking the eve of Human Rights Day was organized by the Faculty of Law, B.N. University, focusing on the significance of public awareness and the integration of human rights with broader concerns like environmental preservation. The event was graced by Justice Ram Chandra Singh Jhala, Chairperson of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission, who underscored the critical role of awareness in ensuring the effective implementation of human rights.
Speaking as the chief guest, Justice Jhala emphasized that while human rights align closely with constitutional rights, a lack of awareness often leaves individuals unable to assert them. He highlighted the historical context, noting how the atrocities of World War II prompted the formation of human rights commissions worldwide. “Human rights are inherent from birth, and their protection requires robust legal frameworks and public vigilance,” he said.
Justice Jhala urged aspiring advocates to become champions of human rights awareness, emphasizing that the commission holds powers equivalent to a civil court, including the ability to summon individuals. He also pointed out that the commission can take suo-motu cognizance of newspaper reports and assured victims that lodging a complaint with the commission is cost-free and straightforward. “Even prisoners retain their rights and cannot be deprived of them,” he remarked.
Chairing the session, Col. Prof. Shiv Singh Sarangdevot, Chairperson of B.N. University, stressed the importance of linking human rights to environmental conservation. “The survival of humanity is intertwined with the preservation of nature. Unchecked exploitation of natural resources threatens both human and environmental rights,” he said, urging collective efforts to protect the environment.
Prof. Sarangdevot also advocated for incorporating human rights education into academic curricula to sensitize future generations. Highlighting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted on December 10, 1948, he said, “Human rights epitomize freedom, equality, and dignity. Safeguarding women’s rights is vital for a progressive society.”
Dr. Mahendra Singh Rathore, Secretary of the B.N. Institute, detailed the commission’s structure and its pivotal role in promoting and protecting human rights at various levels. He stated, “Human rights provide individuals the opportunity to live a life of dignity and freedom, forming the foundation of any progressive society.”
M.D. Mohabbat Singh Rathore emphasized that respecting and protecting human rights are indispensable for societal development. He called on everyone to remain vigilant and uphold the rights of others.
Dr. Niranjan Narayan Singh Rathore, Registrar of B.N. University, reflected on the significance of Human Rights Day, urging students and youth to actively engage in spreading awareness about human rights protection.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anila, and Dr. Kiran Chauhan efficiently conducted the proceedings. The event saw active participation from faculty members, including Dr. Shikha Nagori, Dr. Pushp Lata Dangi, Dr. Krishna Ranawat, Piyush Chavan, and Abhimanyu Singh Chauhan.
