New Delhi, February 16: Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan has become the first bowler to take 700 wickets in T20 cricket. He achieved this milestone during the T20 World Cup 2026 match against the UAE at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.
Rashid secured his 700th wicket by dismissing Muhammad Arfan in the 16th over of the UAE’s innings. Arfan attempted a reverse sweep but missed and was hit wicket.
Just last week, Rashid took his 698th and 699th wickets in a match against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In T20 format, including both league and international cricket, Rashid Khan leads the wicket tally, followed by former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo with 631 wickets, and West Indies spinner Sunil Narine with 613 wickets.
Rashid also holds the record for the most wickets in international T20s, with 191. New Zealand’s former fast bowler Tim Southee and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi follow him with 164 and 162 wickets, respectively.
Speaking to the media last week, Rashid stated, “700 wickets, regardless of the achievement, will continue. I have not set any target in my mind to stop at 700 wickets. When I play for the national team in the World Cup, I give 100 percent effort, and I take wickets when the team needs them.”
In the match against the UAE, Afghanistan won by 5 wickets. The UAE batted first, scoring 160 runs for 9 wickets, while Afghanistan chased down the target with 162 runs for 5 wickets in 19.2 overs. Rashid claimed one wicket in this match.
