Protecting Workers from Heatwave Risks

New Delhi, May 1: On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, there is a strong emphasis on safeguarding the rights and health of workers. With the rising severe heat and heatwaves affecting many parts of the country, it is crucial to take special precautions for the safety of workers today.

The hard work of laborers drives the nation forward, making their health protection a significant responsibility. Workers’ Day serves as a reminder that every hardworking individual has the right to work in a safe and healthy environment. During this season of rising temperatures, laborers working outdoors, construction workers, farmers in the fields, and those working by the roadside are the most affected.

According to the National Health Mission, failure to protect against heat and heatwaves can have serious health impacts on workers. Essential precautions for workers during heat include staying in the shade whenever possible. If working in the sun is unavoidable, it is important to cover the head with a hat, scarf, or cloth. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day is crucial; workers should sip water before feeling thirsty.

Additionally, it is advisable to avoid sugary cold drinks, sodas, and energy drinks, as these can lead to rapid dehydration. Wearing loose, light-colored, and cotton clothing that can absorb sweat and keep the body cool is recommended. Workers should not work continuously in direct sunlight and should take breaks of 10-15 minutes every 45-60 minutes. Eating light and easily digestible meals is also important, as heavy, fried, or spicy foods can increase body heat.

Experts indicate that symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, vomiting, high fever, and fainting. In such cases, it is essential to take the person to a shaded area and cool their body with cold water while seeking medical assistance. Industry organizations and trade unions are urged to rationalize working hours during the hot season, ensure shade and drinking water availability, and raise awareness among workers.
