PM Surya Home Scheme Expands Under Modis Vision

New Delhi, February 13: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government launched the ‘PM Surya Home Scheme’ two years ago with the aim of illuminating every home. This initiative has made a significant impact nationally, reaching over 2.9 million households with electricity. On the occasion of the scheme’s second anniversary, ‘Modi Story’ shared important insights about this decision by the Prime Minister.

According to a post on the social media platform ‘X’, ‘Modi Story’ stated, “Launched on this day in 2024, the PM Surya Home Scheme has a clear vision to provide rooftop solar power to millions of homes and promote clean energy across India. The goal of this initiative was not only to provide subsidies but also to create a nationwide movement towards energy independence through technology-driven implementation.”

The post further mentioned that Prime Minister Modi suggested linking the ‘PM Surya Home’ scheme with the Gati Shakti initiative, allowing rooftop solar planning to connect with a larger national digital infrastructure platform, thereby benefiting society on a larger scale.

In a video released by ‘Modi Story’, former Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, shared, “We were preparing to launch the rooftop solar scheme, which later became known as the ‘PM Surya Home’ scheme. I remember we presented three or four presentations to Prime Minister Modi, and during the final presentation, we were ready to show how we planned to implement it.”

He added, “We were trying to demonstrate how technology could be used to assess solar systems installed on rooftops and inform consumers about the potential electricity generation from their roofs.”

Bhalla recalled, “I remember he clearly asked, ‘Can this not be integrated with Gati Shakti?’ This was very important for us. We hadn’t even thought about that aspect. We were only considering our rooftop solar perspective, but his vision was broader on how to integrate it with a national technology platform and use that data and technology for the greater good of society. I believe that perspective was very significant.”

According to the PM Surya Home scheme portal, over 6.08 million applications have been received in the past two years. So far, more than 2.36 million rooftop solar installations have been completed, benefiting 2,937,640 families. The government has also released ₹16,920.15 crores in subsidies for this scheme.
