Udaipur : Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences, PIMS Hospital, Umarda, have successfully treated a patient who had been suffering from an illness for six months.
PIMS chairman Ashish Aggarwal said that a 40-year-old patient from Udaipur had been complaining of asthma and coughing up phlegm and blood (hemoptysis) for the past six months. The patient was admitted to PIMS Hospital a few days ago.
An X-ray showed a radio-opaque shadow in the left middle field. In addition, the CT scan showed a hypo-dense lesion with air foci in the left upper lobe, suggesting a large bronchocele, a hydatid cyst. A bronchoscopy was planned by the respiratory team of Dr. Sanidhtya Tank, Dr. Gurmahar Singh Sethi, Dr. Arpit Jauhar, Dr. Shubnish Chaudhary, Dr. Gauranga Singh Jadon, Dr. Abdul Wahab Mirza, and technician Giriraj.
Bronchoscopy was performed and aspiration of laminated membrane-like structures was done, revealing a laminated cyst wall. The patient was then operated and the lobe with the cystic lesion was removed and sent for histopathology, which showed a hydatid cyst with fungal infection. The patient was given antifungal medication and discharged.
Doctors from the respiratory department of PIMS said that these cases are usually treated as pneumonia with failure. Sometimes, death can occur due to massive hemoptysis, so a thorough investigation should be done and acted accordingly.
