Pakistani Diplomat Expelled from India for Espionage Activities Involving Sensitive Military Data

Indian Government Declares Official from Pakistan High Commission Persona Non Grata

New Delhi, May 13, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic move, the Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, identified as Ehsan Ur Rahim alias Danish, persona non grata and ordered his expulsion within 24 hours. The official, stationed at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, is accused of engaging in activities incompatible with his diplomatic status, including attempts to obtain sensitive military information related to the Indian Army.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Pakistani official was involved in actions that violated the norms of diplomatic conduct. A formal demarche was issued to the Charge d’Affaires of Pakistan, summoning them to convey India’s protest and notification of expulsion.

Punjab Police Uncovers Espionage Network

The development follows a major breakthrough by the Punjab Police, who arrested an Indian national allegedly linked to the Pakistani diplomat. The individual is accused of transmitting classified defence-related information, compromising national security. Preliminary investigations suggest that the arrested individual was part of a broader intelligence-gathering network operating within Indian territory.

Law enforcement officials stated that the arrest helped expose a larger conspiracy, and further investigations are underway to determine the extent of the information leak and other individuals involved.

Strained Diplomatic Ties and Security Vigilance

This expulsion comes at a time when India-Pakistan relations remain fragile, particularly concerning cross-border security, terrorism, and intelligence operations. The MEA emphasized that any misuse of diplomatic privileges for activities that threaten India’s security and sovereignty will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.

Declaring a foreign diplomat persona non grata is a rare and serious measure under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, often reserved for cases involving espionage or acts hostile to the host nation.

Indian authorities continue to maintain heightened vigilance around diplomatic missions, especially amid concerns of foreign intelligence operations targeting critical defence infrastructure.
