Oslo, May 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo today. The summit aims to strengthen strategic partnerships between India and Nordic countries in areas such as technology, renewable energy, defense, sustainability, and trade.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), “The third India-Nordic Summit will be held on May 19, 2026, in Oslo. Alongside Prime Minister Modi, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Iceland’s Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will also attend the summit.”
The MEA stated that this summit will build on the previous two summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022, further enhancing India-Nordic relations, particularly in technology and innovation, green transition, renewable energy, sustainability, blue economy, defense, space, and Arctic matters.
Before the summit, Prime Minister Modi attended the India-Norway Business and Research Summit in Oslo on Monday, where he emphasized the growing economic cooperation between the two countries following the implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.
The event saw participation from over 50 CEOs and more than 250 individuals from the business and research sectors of India and Norway. Several business agreements were signed between Indian and Norwegian institutions during this time.
During his visit, PM Modi arrived in Norway as part of his five-nation tour, receiving a warm welcome from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at the airport. India’s Ambassador to Norway, Me-Ailin Steiner, and Norway’s Ambassador to India, Gloria Gangte, along with other senior officials, were also present.
During his stay, PM Modi met with King Harald V of Norway at the Royal Palace, where both leaders discussed the growing collaboration between Indian and Norwegian companies in emerging technologies.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), “He appreciated Norway’s natural beauty and stated that the longstanding friendship between India and Norway continues to strengthen based on shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, and people-centered governance.”
Later, King Harald hosted a lunch in honor of Prime Minister Modi, who thanked the King for the warm welcome and hospitality.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, the highest civilian honor given to foreign heads of state and government in Norway. After receiving the honor, PM Modi expressed, “I feel honored to receive the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honor is dedicated to the people of India and symbolizes the strong friendship between India and Norway. It reflects our shared commitment to global progress.”
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to King Harald and the people of Norway for this recognition. According to the PMO, this honor is awarded for outstanding services to Norway and humanity.
