Mahakumbh Nagar, January 4 – As the grand spiritual event Mahakumbh 2025 approaches, saints, mystics, and ascetics from across India and abroad have begun arriving in Prayagraj, captivating devotees with their unique vows and practices. Among them is Gangapuri Maharaj, a 57-year-old saint from Kamakhya Dham, Assam, who has drawn attention for his height and a remarkable vow—he hasn’t taken a bath in 32 years.

Gangapuri Maharaj: Turning His Height into Strength
Standing at approximately 3.5 feet, Gangapuri Maharaj firmly believes that his height is a source of spiritual strength, not a limitation. “My height has had no negative impact on my life. I became an ascetic at a very young age, and my stature has been an integral part of my spiritual journey,” he shared.
Despite his modest height, it is his unusual vow that has made him a subject of fascination. For the past 32 years, the saint has refrained from bathing. Instead, he only washes his matted locks (jata), which he claims symbolizes spiritual cleansing. “This isn’t just any ordinary vow—it’s a crucial part of my spiritual practice,” he explained.
A Vow Backed by Faith and Discipline
According to Gangapuri Maharaj, his ability to remain healthy and content without bathing for over three decades is the result of his guru’s blessings. “I made a vow years ago, and until it is fulfilled, I won’t take a bath. Washing my hair alone is sufficient—it represents the essence of spiritual purification,” he stated.
Even during the Mahakumbh, where bathing in the holy Sangam is considered a sacred ritual, Gangapuri Maharaj has clarified that he will not partake in it personally. “Only my jata will be washed, as it holds more spiritual significance than the body,” he asserted.
Devotees Curious and Awed by the Unique Vow
As word spreads about Gangapuri Maharaj’s unique lifestyle and unwavering commitment to his vow, devotees and visitors at Mahakumbh Nagar are flocking to catch a glimpse of the saint. His story has sparked curiosity and admiration, with many viewing his dedication as a testament to the power of faith and self-discipline.
