
Tokyo : Japan was hit by a powerful earthquake on Saturday at 10.27 pm (local time). No tsunami warning has been issued so far, according to the National Research Institute for Earth Sciences and Disaster Resilience (NIED), reports Reuters. The intensity of the earthquake has been recorded at 6.1 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake hit off the Nemuro peninsula, at a depth of 61 Kms. Strong tremors were felt at the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, as per media reports. There was no immediate report of damage to life and infrastructure.
