IPL 2025 Orange Cap Race: Suryakumar Yadav’s Dream Ends, Kohli and Iyer Face Uphill Battle

The race for the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 has taken a dramatic turn, with Suryakumar Yadav’s hopes now officially dashed after Mumbai Indians’ (MI) exit in Qualifier 2. With MI losing to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by five wickets, SKY’s chances of claiming the top run-scorer honor came to an end. Now, all eyes are on Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, but the odds are stacked against both.

IPL 2025 Orange Cap Race

SKY Falls Short Despite Stellar Season

Suryakumar Yadav delivered an exceptional season with the bat, finishing with 717 runs from 16 matches at a phenomenal average of 65.18, including five half-centuries. His final knock of the season came in the eliminator, where he scored a quickfire 44 off 26 balls against Punjab, featuring four boundaries and three sixes. Despite his efforts, it wasn’t enough to keep MI in the tournament or keep him in the running for the Orange Cap.

Sai Sudharsan in Command

As it stands, Gujarat Titans’ opener Sai Sudharsan holds the Orange Cap with 759 runs from 15 games at an average of 54.21, including one century and six fifties. Gujarat’s campaign ended in the Eliminator against Mumbai, but Sudharsan’s consistent form has kept him ahead of the pack.

Can Kohli or Iyer Pull Off a Miracle?

With just one match remaining—the IPL 2025 Final on June 3 between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)—only two players can potentially dethrone Sudharsan: Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

  • Virat Kohli has amassed 614 runs in 14 matches at an impressive average of 55.81, but he would need 146 runs in the final to overtake Sudharsan—an extremely tall order, even by his lofty standards.

  • Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS skipper, has accumulated 603 runs from 16 matches at 54.81. He would need 157 runs in the final to clinch the Orange Cap—essentially requiring a record-breaking knock.

Both Kohli and Iyer are known for their match-winning capabilities, but in the high-pressure setting of a final, such big scores may be too much to expect.

Updated Orange Cap Standings (Top 6)

5 Virat Kohli (RCB) 14 614 55.81

With just the final left to be played, Sudharsan looks set to retain the Orange Cap unless something extraordinary happens on the night of the title clash.
