New Delhi, August 1: President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Indian judokas Asmita Day and Harsh Singh for their remarkable achievements at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow. On Friday, India secured two gold medals in judo, with Asmita winning the first and Harsh clinching the second.
In a message on the official X platform, President Murmu praised Asmita for becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal, stating, “Congratulations to Asmita Day for making history by winning the gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your splendid victory is a great example of determination, skill, and dedication. Your success will inspire many emerging athletes to follow in your footsteps. May you continue to reach new heights.”
The President also extended her congratulations to Harsh Singh, writing, “Heartfelt congratulations to Harsh Singh for winning the gold medal in judo at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your exceptional skills, patience, and dedication have brought India another glorious moment in sports. Keep bringing honor to the nation.”
Asmita defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48 kg judo final, becoming the first Indian judoka to win gold in Commonwealth Games history. Shortly after her victory, Harsh triumphed over Australia’s Joshua Katz in the men’s 60 kg final, marking him as the first Indian male judoka to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.
In addition to Asmita and Harsh, Yamini Maurya also earned a silver medal in judo, competing in the women’s 57 kg final against England’s Aseelia Toprak. Despite her efforts, Yamini had to settle for silver after losing the match.
