India Operationalises World’s Highest Airfield Near China Border

New Delhi, October 31 (Udaipur Kiran): India has achieved a historic milestone by operationalising the world’s highest airfield just 50 kilometres from the China border. The upgraded Nyoma Airfield, located at an altitude of 13,700 feet in eastern Ladakh, will now allow the operation of MiG-29 and Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets, significantly boosting India’s strategic air power along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

 Highest Airfield

The new facility enhances India’s defence capability against potential threats from China’s Xinjiang military region and Pakistan’s northern areas.

Earlier, India had constructed the world’s highest airstrip at Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), situated at 16,600 feet. However, due to severe weather and operational challenges, DBO was not suitable for regular or wartime operations. Hence, Nyoma was chosen as a reliable alternative airbase in Ladakh, supplementing Leh and Thoise, whose operations were often affected by harsh weather.

The decision to develop Nyoma was taken after a detailed feasibility study of both Nyoma and Fukche. While Fukche faced infrastructural and expansion limitations, Nyoma’s conditions were found to be suitable for all-weather operations. Although environmental clearance posed an initial challenge due to its location near the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and black-necked cranes, the Indian Air Force later secured approval with specific conditions.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was tasked with upgrading the airfield, originally inaugurated on September 18, 2009. The existing mud runway has now been replaced by a 2.7-kilometre-long concrete runway, enabling the operation of both fighter and heavy transport aircraft.

According to the Defence Ministry, this achievement not only strengthens India’s Himalayan defence frontier but also sends a strong message of readiness and resilience. The Nyoma Airfield, being the world’s highest operational airbase, enhances India’s airpower capability along the LAC and reinforces national security in the sensitive border zone.

Notably, during the 2020 standoff with China, aircraft such as the C-130J Super Hercules, AN-32 transporters, MI-17, CH-47F Chinook, and AH-64E Apache helicopters had already landed at Nyoma, underlining its strategic importance.
