“I Think Like a Batter, That’s My Strength” – Moeen Ali Reflects on Match-Winning Spell Against Rajasthan Royals

Guwahati, March 27 — Moeen Ali, the seasoned England all-rounder, made an immediate impact in his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) debut by delivering a standout performance in their first victory of IPL 2025. In a post-match press conference following KKR’s emphatic eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals (RR), Moeen opened up about his bowling mindset, the role he played, and what it means to be part of a star-studded team like KKR.

Moeen’s Strategic Spin: Thinking Like a Batter

Moeen Ali showcased his experience and cricketing intelligence by claiming 2 wickets for just 23 runs, a spell that included a classical off-spin delivery to dismiss Nitish Rana—one of the most talked-about moments of the match.

Speaking to the media, Moeen explained, “I always think like a batter, and that’s my biggest strength. It helps me anticipate what the opposition is trying to do. When I bowl, I picture how I would attack myself if I were facing this spell.”

Moeen also dismissed in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and helped choke the Royals’ momentum alongside Varun Chakaravarthy, who bowled a miserly 2/17 in his quota. The two spinners’ partnership ensured RR could manage only 151/9.

Filling Big Shoes and Seizing the Moment

With KKR’s premier spinner Sunil Narine unavailable due to illness, Moeen was informed on the morning of the match that he would be stepping in. Despite being a last-minute inclusion, he embraced the opportunity with calm and confidence.

“I knew I had to be ready. Sunil is a legend, and replacing him is never easy. But I’ve been in situations like this before, and my job was to keep things tight, let Varun attack from the other end, and set the platform,” Moeen added.

On his role in the team, Moeen said, “I’ve always enjoyed being the second spinner—someone who builds pressure. I bowl with spinners who have more variations than me, so my task is to keep it simple, contain runs, and create chances for the others.”

Adaptability, Humility, and Hunger at 37

At 37, Moeen’s humility and commitment to the game were evident. Despite not being a regular starter in the KKR XI, he holds no complaints.

“It’s hard to get into such a balanced team. With players like Narine, Russell, and De Kock, there’s tough competition. But that’s the beauty of big teams. I’m still learning, still improving, and I want to contribute every chance I get,” Moeen stated.

Reflecting on the spin-friendly surface in Guwahati, he said, “It was the kind of pitch where you won’t see 300-run games—maybe even 200 is tough. But that’s good for cricket; it brings balance and showcases different skills.”

Moeen’s composed performance not only earned him plaudits but also reasserted his status as a world-class spin all-rounder. In what was his comeback match in the IPL, he proved that experience, insight, and preparation still hold tremendous value in the modern game.
