Heavy Rains Lash Maharashtra, Several Areas Flooded; Administration on High Alert

Mumbai, September 28 (Udaipur Kiran News) – Continuous heavy rainfall for the second straight day on Sunday has caused severe flooding across several districts of Maharashtra, submerging large areas and raising river levels dangerously close to the danger mark. The State Emergency Management Department has directed district authorities to remain on high alert and step up rescue and relief efforts.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast

According to officials, torrential rain continues in Mumbai, its surrounding regions, and Marathwada. In response, authorities have started releasing water from key reservoirs including Jayakwadi, Sina Kolegaon, Koyna, and Gosikhurd dams, leading to flooding in nearby rural areas.

The Jayakwadi Dam has released 1.25 lakh cusecs of water into the Godavari River, while Sina River dams have discharged 60,000–75,000 cusecs. In Vidarbha, 19 gates of the Gosikhurd Dam have been opened, prompting a high alert for residents along riverbanks. As a result, floodwaters have entered fields and homes in low-lying villages. NDRF, SDRF, and Indian Navy teams are conducting rescue operations to evacuate stranded residents.

🌧️ Mumbai Traffic Hit by Waterlogging

Heavy downpours in Mumbai led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, disrupting traffic on major roads. Commuters faced long jams on:

  • Western Express Highway (Goregaon East)

  • Eastern Express Highway (Vikhroli–Chedda Nagar, Amar Mahal–Sion stretch)

  • Tilak Bridge in Dadar

The Andheri Subway remained closed for hours due to nearly two feet of water but was reopened later as the water receded. Police have urged motorists to avoid waterlogged routes, with slow-moving traffic reported from Malad to Dahisar and near toll plazas.

🚨 Relief and Rescue Efforts Underway

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a review meeting with district collectors of Marathwada and Solapur, instructing them to ensure immediate relief through food, shelter, and medical support for affected residents.

With rain expected to continue, the administration has warned of possible flooding in low-lying regions and urged citizens to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
