Complex Bronchoscopy Restores Collapsed Lung of 23-Year-Old Woman at PIMS Udaipur
Udaipur, August 11, 2026: A 23-year-old woman from Pali, Rajasthan, who was referred to the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, with severe respiratory symptoms, has successfully undergone a complex bronchoscopy procedure that restored the function of her completely collapsed left lung.

The patient was admitted with complaints of breathing difficulty, left-sided chest pain, cough with sputum, fever, general weakness, weight loss and loss of appetite.
Initial chest X-ray and HRCT chest scans revealed that the patient’s left lung had completely collapsed. Following the findings, specialist doctors decided to perform an immediate bronchoscopy.
Complete Blockage in Left Main Bronchus
During the bronchoscopy, doctors found that the patient’s left main bronchus was completely blocked, making it impossible to advance the bronchoscope further.
The medical team obtained samples of bronchoalveolar lavage, brush cytology and biopsy from the blocked area. N-acetyl cysteine was subsequently instilled, which helped successfully remove the accumulated mucus plug.
A post-procedure X-ray showed that the patient’s left lung had re-expanded. Her breathing also improved significantly following the procedure.
Further investigations diagnosed the patient with endobronchial tuberculosis, after which the required treatment was started.
Procedure Performed by Specialist Team
The complex procedure was successfully carried out by the resident doctors and bronchoscopy team under the guidance of Dr Mayur Devraj, Dr Raju Kottakota, Dr Sanidhya Tak, Dr Karan Raj Singhal and Dr Aniruddha Aaron.
PIMS Highlights Role of Timely Diagnosis
PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal said the availability of advanced bronchoscopy facilities and experienced specialists at PIMS is helping in the timely and accurate diagnosis of complex respiratory diseases.
He said symptoms such as persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain, fever or unexplained weight loss should not be ignored and patients should consult a specialist in time.
Timely investigation and appropriate treatment can help achieve better outcomes in serious lung diseases.
