Heatwave Grips 18 Districts in Uttar Pradesh, Thunderstorm Alert in 14 Others

Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh continues to reel under intense summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a heatwave alert for 18 districts and a thunderstorm warning for 14 others on Monday. The state is witnessing a sharp contrast in weather conditions, with the potential for light showers and wind speeds reaching 50 km/h.

Heatwave in UP

According to the latest IMD report released Sunday evening, Jhansi recorded the highest temperature at a scorching 45.4°C, while Meerut saw the lowest at 24.6°C. The blistering heat is expected to persist, though some regions may experience temporary relief due to rainfall and gusty winds.

Weather Shift Triggered by Bay of Bengal Moisture

Meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh confirmed the activation of a fresh western disturbance and weather system over Uttar Pradesh. Moisture-laden easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are now impacting the state, resulting in cloud formation and increased chances of isolated rainfall with thunder.

“This could bring down the severity of the heatwave in a few districts,” Singh noted. “However, temperatures are expected to rise again after 3–4 days, with mercury likely to soar up to 47°C by the end of May.”

Four-Day Weather Forecast for Uttar Pradesh

May 20: Widespread rainfall with the possibility of lightning and winds gusting up to 50 km/h.

May 21: Cloud cover across the state with scattered rainfall and potential hailstorms.

May 22: Light to moderate rainfall likely in various regions, accompanied by strong winds.

May 23: High-speed winds expected with partly cloudy skies; isolated rain likely.

Rapid Weather Changes Impacting Public Health

The fluctuating weather — from searing heat to sudden rain — is taking a toll on public health. Hospitals are reporting a surge in patients suffering from viral fever, cough, stomach pain, headaches, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Dr. V.K. Singh, Emergency Nodal Officer at Varanasi District Hospital, advised caution: “Avoid crowded places and close contact with people showing symptoms of cold or fever. Stay hydrated, avoid fasting in this heat, and seek medical attention if cough persists for several days. Avoid self-medication.”

Monsoon Expected to Arrive in Uttar Pradesh by June 20

The southwest monsoon may arrive in Kerala four days earlier than usual, by May 27, according to IMD projections. Typically, it reaches Kerala on June 1 and spreads across the country by July 8.

In Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon generally arrives around June 18. However, weather experts suggest a likely arrival around June 20 this year via Sonbhadra in eastern UP. While last year’s forecast also projected a June 20 onset, the monsoon was delayed by 10 days despite reaching Kerala two days ahead of schedule.
