Amritsar | May 19 – Relief from the scorching heat is expected in Punjab as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain and wind alert for 11 districts in the state today. Even though the last 24 hours brought a marginal 1°C drop in temperature, nine districts still recorded maximum temperatures above 40°C, with Bathinda hitting a season-high 45.3°C.
Despite being marginally cooler, the current average temperature across the state is still 1.8°C higher than normal.
Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms and Winds in 11 Districts
According to the IMD, a yellow alert has been issued for the following districts today: Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Nawanshahr, and Patiala. These regions may experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and scattered rainfall. Gusts could reach speeds of up to 40–50 km/h.
Weather Warning Valid Through May 24
The IMD has extended the weather warning till May 24, covering possibilities of dust storms, lightning, and strong winds across various parts of Punjab. On May 22, specific alerts have been issued for Bathinda, Faridkot, Fazilka, and Mansa, where extreme weather conditions are more likely.

Relief from Heat Expected But Vigilance Needed
While rainfall may provide temporary respite from the intense summer heat, residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay indoors during peak hours, avoid open spaces during lightning, and secure loose outdoor items due to the risk of gusty winds.
