Tokyo, June 24: Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of the United Nations nuclear agency, has indicated that inspectors will visit Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites. This is a significant aspect of the interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Grossi’s comments represent the clearest indication yet of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) role in determining the status of Iran’s nuclear stockpile. Amid conflicting statements regarding nuclear monitoring from both the U.S. and Iran, Grossi’s remarks are particularly noteworthy. He addressed journalists in Tokyo, responding to their questions.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance claimed that Iran has agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into the country. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, stated that there has been no meeting with Grossi and no clear timeline has been established for inspections. Nevertheless, Iran has not ruled out the possibility of such inspections in the future.
Since the war last June, Tehran has prevented the IAEA from inspecting the enrichment sites, where it is believed the Islamic Republic has amassed enough highly enriched uranium to potentially create nearly 10 nuclear weapons if it chooses to do so. Iran has long maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful.
During a press conference at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Grossi stated, “I can understand political statements; they are part of reality, but the most important thing is that a memorandum of understanding has been signed by the presidents of both countries.”
He emphasized that the agreement clearly states that all activities related to nuclear materials will be conducted under IAEA supervision. Grossi added, “Clearly, we need to conduct inspections. Whether this happens the day after tomorrow, a week later, or in ten days is important but not mandatory. This process will certainly take place.”
