Gill and Abhishek Sharma to Open for India in the First T20 Against Zimbabwe

Harare, July 6 (Udaipur Kiran)Indian captain Shubman Gill confirmed the Indian batting lineup ahead of the first T20 match in the five-match series against Zimbabwe, which will begin on Saturday evening at Harare Sports Club.

The current Indian team is markedly different from the T20 World Cup-winning squad from Barbados last week. With stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja having retired from T20s, the younger players have the opportunity to secure their spots in the shortest format of the game.

Without Kohli and Rohit, India is set to embark on a new era. The new batting setup will feature Gill and young Abhishek Sharma as the opening pair, with Ruturaj Gaikwad coming in at number three.

Gill said at the pre-match press conference, “Abhishek Sharma will open with me, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will play at number three.”

This series against Zimbabwe marks Gill’s first tenure as the Indian captain. Earlier this year, he debuted as the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

GT finished their IPL 2024 campaign in the eighth position with five wins, seven losses, and 12 points, ending with a negative net run rate of -1.063.

Gill believes he learned a lot during his first stint as captain in this cash-rich league. “I learned a lot. When I first captained my IPL team, I discovered a lot about myself and my approach to leadership. Most of the challenges you face as a captain are mental,” he said.

Indian players like Harshit Rana, Riyan Parag, Tushar Deshpande, and Abhishek will have the opportunity to make their debut for the national team. Gill feels that this series will help the young and debuting players gain international experience and exposure.

“This is a very different team from the one that played in the World Cup. There are many young players in the team, including myself. So, I think we want to give the players experience and let them know what it’s like to play at the international level, because many players haven’t played that many matches, and some haven’t even debuted yet. So, I think our goal for this series is to give them more international experience,” Gill added.

India will play the first match of the T20 series on Saturday evening at the Harare Sports Club.
