SRINAGAR, October 6 (Udaipur Kiran): The higher reaches of Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Gurez, and several other mountainous regions, witnessed the season’s first snowfall this week, signaling an early arrival of winter in the Valley.

Fresh snowfall was reported from Gulmarg’s Afarwat, Anantnag’s Sinthan Top, Zojila Pass, Gumri, Minimarg, and Rajdhan Top — the gateway to Gurez Valley in Bandipora district. Light snowfall began in Rajdhan Top early Monday morning, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures across upper areas. However, officials confirmed that the Bandipora-Gurez road remains open for traffic.
According to the Meteorological Department, a western disturbance is likely to bring more rain and snow to parts of Jammu and Kashmir between October 5 and 7. Light rainfall was recorded in Srinagar and adjoining areas, while intermittent showers continued in several plains of north and south Kashmir.
The weather change has brought joy among locals and tourists, who consider this the first sign of the winter season. Authorities have, however, urged travelers — particularly those heading to higher altitudes — to remain cautious as falling temperatures have made roads slippery.
Meanwhile, most parts of the Jammu division also experienced light to moderate rainfall since late Sunday night, resulting in a further dip in temperature.
