Udaipur: Environmental Call to Action Amid Climate Crisis
Udaipur, India – Addressing a gathering of students and educators at Adinath Senior Secondary School, environmentalist and ALERT organization president Jitendra Mehta warned that rapid deforestation, urban sprawl, and unchecked industrialization are causing irreversible damage to Earth’s natural ecosystems. His address, delivered on Earth Day 2025, emphasized that tropical rainforests, grasslands, and wetlands are vanishing at alarming rates.
Mehta cited the example of the Amazon rainforest — often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” — and noted its accelerating decline. “Deforestation is not only eliminating natural habitats for wildlife but also diminishing our planet’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, intensifying the effects of global warming,” he said.
Urgent Call for Collective Action
Highlighting the devastating impact of illegal poaching and unsustainable forest exploitation, Mehta stated that many species are now on the brink of extinction. He urged both the public and governments to take unified action before it’s too late, stressing that current environmental efforts are insufficient to reverse the damage.
“Protecting nature isn’t optional anymore—it’s essential for our survival,” Mehta warned, calling for an integrated approach that combines education, policy, and citizen participation.
Science, Spirituality, and Sustainability: Key Themes of the Day
Chief guest Dr. Surendra Pokharna, an ISRO scientist and social activist, emphasized a holistic approach to conservation. “We must revere Earth as we do our mothers. Our use of resources should be mindful, guided by both science and spirituality,” he said. Dr. Pokharna also discussed the global consequences of climate change, including water, air, and soil pollution, and urged immediate action to protect future generations.
The event was hosted under the leadership of Principal Dr. Ritu Bhatnagar, who welcomed the guests with traditional floral greetings. Over 200 students and teachers participated in the Earth Day program. The proceedings were conducted by faculty member Mrs. Neelam Ramanuj.
