New Delhi, September 21 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Patiala House Court in New Delhi has denied bail to Hari Ram Gupta, the owner of a building that collapsed in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan, resulting in the tragic deaths of seven individuals. The court emphasized that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and that a charge sheet has yet to be filed, making it inappropriate to grant bail at this time.
During the hearing, Gupta’s lawyer argued for bail on the grounds of his client’s age and health, stating that Gupta is elderly and suffers from multiple ailments. The defense also claimed that Gupta had no direct involvement in the day-to-day operations of the building.
However, the court dismissed these arguments, noting that Gupta is attempting to distance himself from the building, while the records tell a different story. The court pointed out that the building’s electricity connection remains registered in Gupta’s name, and several witnesses have indicated his role in the construction and ongoing activities of the building.
The court further stated that the investigation revealed the building generated over ₹1 lakh in monthly rent, raising questions about the expenditure on its maintenance and repairs. This case, the court noted, involves negligence and requires thorough examination.
While acknowledging the significance of Gupta’s age and health concerns, the court found no medical emergency that would necessitate his release from judicial custody. The judge instructed the jail superintendent to ensure that Gupta receives all prescribed medications and that his health is monitored appropriately.
The incident occurred on September 12, when part of the dilapidated building collapsed, killing five students and two laborers, while injuring several others. Following the disaster, Delhi police arrested Gupta, his wife Urmila Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta on September 7, charging them with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligence.
