Rajinikanth’s film Jailer 2 has crossed the Rs. 700 crore mark at the worldwide box office within twelve days of its release. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, has reached a total of Rs. 703 crore, comprising Rs. 454 crore from India and Rs. 249 crore (approximately USD 26.2 million) from overseas.
This accomplishment sets a new record for the Tamil film industry, overtaking the previous benchmark of Rs. 600 crore. The film’s success has sparked discussions about whether it has surpassed the lifetime gross of the 2018 film 2.0, which reportedly grossed around Rs. 800 crore, although its exact figure remains unverified due to the lack of official confirmation from the producers.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala has advised caution regarding the reported figures for 2.0, stating that the actual numbers can vary significantly. “So far, it was widely reported that 2.0 made around Rs 800 crore. But, the problem is that the official numbers are known only to the producers,” he said. This uncertainty complicates comparisons between the two films as Jailer 2 continues its run in theaters.
In its opening week, Jailer 2 earned Rs. 334.35 crore nett in India, followed by an additional Rs. 64.35 crore nett in its second weekend, bringing its domestic net collection to Rs. 398.70 crore. The film’s performance has remained strong, with audience interest evident as it sold around 7,000 tickets in just an hour on a recent Monday.
With a clear release window leading up to Diwali and no significant films competing for attention, expectations are high that Jailer 2 could further increase its earnings. Bala noted, “Whatever it is, Jailer 2 becoming the top industry hit is inevitable.”
