Apple confirmed on Monday that it will replace certain iPhone Duo devices after users reported screen cracks along the crease where the display folds. This announcement follows the recent launch of the foldable phone, which began shipping to customers last week.

The cracks appear primarily on the inner display, with reports indicating that horizontal bright lines emerge from the hinge. Apple stated that the issue affects a “small number” of units and advised customers experiencing problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

iFixit, a well-known repair analysis company, conducted a teardown of the iPhone Duo and suggested that the screen damage may be related to the device’s hinge design. They indicated that the stress points near the display cable and a central support bar could be contributing to the reported cracks. iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens noted that even minor manufacturing variances could harm the display panel.

Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at IDC, remarked that Apple’s decision to replace affected devices is a commendable first step. He drew parallels to Samsung’s early issues with the Galaxy Fold, stating that a swift and transparent response is crucial for maintaining consumer confidence in foldable technology.

Early reviews of the iPhone Duo showed a positive user experience, especially for multitasking and media consumption. However, some applications have yet to be optimized for the device’s unique screen layout.

Apple also noted that developers are actively updating their apps to improve compatibility with the new foldable format, and responses from early users have been very encouraging.
