New Delhi, 2 January. Pimples and facial acne can be a common and frustrating problem for many. They often appear suddenly and can persist for weeks. Merely using skincare products is not sufficient to prevent them; understanding the root causes is equally important. Both modern science and Ayurveda explain why pimples develop and how to effectively manage them.
According to modern medical research, hormonal changes are the primary reason behind pimples. This is especially true during adolescence, before periods, or in conditions like PCOD and thyroid imbalance. Hormonal fluctuations increase oil production in the skin, which blocks pores. When dead skin cells, makeup, or dirt are not cleaned properly, bacteria multiply, resulting in pimples.
Besides hormones, digestive issues can also lead to pimples. Problems like constipation, gas, acidity, or delayed bowel movements cause toxins to accumulate in the body, which then get expelled through the skin. Additionally, poor diet habits such as consuming excessive fried foods, junk food, chocolates, cold drinks, or too much milk and tea can worsen acne. Lack of sleep, staying up late, and stress also disrupt hormone balance.
Ayurveda attributes pimples mainly to imbalances in Pitta and Kapha doshas. Increased Pitta causes heat and inflammation, leading to red and painful pimples, while elevated Kapha results in oily skin, whiteheads, and blackheads. Constipation or blockage in bowel movements is another significant factor, as toxins are not eliminated from the body.
The location of pimples on the face can indicate different causes. Pimples on the forehead often relate to digestion and gas issues. Cheek breakouts are commonly linked to hormonal imbalance and junk food intake. Pimples on the chin and jawline often signal hormonal disruption or menstrual problems. Those appearing on the nose may be due to excess oil and Pitta aggravation.
Certain habits can worsen acne, such as squeezing pimples, excessive face washing, using creams without consulting a doctor, or leaving makeup on overnight.
To get rid of pimples, addressing constipation and hormonal imbalance is crucial. Ayurveda recommends a 21-day cleansing plan that includes taking Triphala powder and dry ginger on an empty stomach in the morning, Hingwashtak powder before meals, and Mahamanjishtadi decoction to purify blood and skin. Externally, using neem, Multani mitti (fuller’s earth), rose water masks, and aloe vera gel can be beneficial.
Dietary changes are also important. Eating papaya, pomegranate, bottle gourd, moong dal, and buttermilk is advised, while reducing fried foods, junk food, chocolates, and tea intake.
