Health experts believe that proper nutrition during childhood enhances both physical and mental development. In contrast, a lack of iron can lead to weakness, lethargy, and reduced activity levels in children. Prolonged anemia can negatively affect memory, learning capacity, and mental growth.
The National Health Mission (NHM) recommends incorporating iron-rich foods into children’s daily meals to prevent anemia. This includes leafy green vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, jaggery, pomegranates, and dates. Additionally, fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, amla, and lemons, help enhance iron absorption in the body.
Experts advise that complementary feeding should begin at six months of age. A nutritious diet alongside breastfeeding provides essential nutrition to children. A balanced diet also strengthens their immune system, keeping them healthier.
Furthermore, the NHM emphasizes that children aged six to 59 months should receive iron and folic acid (IFA) syrup supplements as per medical advice. This is effective in addressing iron deficiency and preventing anemia.
