Breathe Easy: The Benefits of Pranayama During Pregnancy

New Delhi, May 6: Pregnancy is a special and beautiful phase in every woman’s life, but it also brings various changes to both the body and mind. Mood swings due to hormonal changes and feelings of fatigue are common during this time, making a little stress quite normal. Practicing pranayama daily can be beneficial in such situations.

Pranayama refers to the proper control of breath. While it may sound easy, its effects are profound. Taking slow, deep breaths calms the mind, provides the body with adequate oxygen, and creates a sense of inner peace.

The Ministry of Ayush recently highlighted on its official social media account that pranayama is especially beneficial during pregnancy, as it benefits both the mother and the child. Among various techniques, Nadi Shodhana pranayama is considered the best. This involves inhaling through one nostril and exhaling through the other, which helps calm the mind and reduce stress. Practicing for just a few minutes daily can lead to noticeable differences.

Additionally, Sheetali pranayama is quite useful. In this technique, the tongue is curled like a tube to inhale, and the breath is exhaled through the nose, helping to lower body temperature. This is particularly soothing during hot weather and is considered very comfortable for pregnant women.

Bhramari pranayama is also highly effective. It involves making a humming sound while exhaling, resembling a bee. This technique calms the mind, reduces anxiety, and can improve sleep quality. It provides immediate relief when one feels overly restless.

The best part is that these pranayama techniques do not require much time or elaborate preparation. Just 10-15 minutes of practice in the morning or evening can yield significant benefits.

Mental peace is crucial during pregnancy, as a mother’s stress can affect the baby. Therefore, it is essential for women to strive to keep themselves happy and relaxed. Pranayama can be a great support in this regard, along with light walking, nutritious food, and adequate rest.

However, it is important to consult a doctor or expert before starting any form of yoga or pranayama during pregnancy.
