Mumbai, July 30: The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred time for the worship of Lord Shiva. During this period, millions of devotees observe fasts on Mondays to please Bholenath. While many people consume fruit-based meals without salt, some opt for meals that include salt. However, this is not ordinary salt; it is rock salt. Have you ever wondered why only rock salt is consumed during fasting? There are not just religious beliefs but also scientific reasons behind this practice.
According to religious beliefs, the purpose of fasting is not merely to remain hungry but to purify both body and mind. This is why it is advised to consume foods that are natural, sattvic, and minimally processed during fasting. Rock salt is consumed for these very qualities.
Ordinary salt is produced through various chemical processes in factories, where iodine and other elements are added, categorizing it as processed food. In contrast, rock salt is extracted naturally from rocks and does not undergo extensive chemical processing, making it purer. This is why it is considered suitable for fasting in religious traditions.
From a scientific perspective, rock salt is also deemed beneficial in several ways. During fasting, people do not consume regular meals, which can lead to a deficiency of electrolytes in the body. Rock salt helps maintain electrolyte balance and can reduce fatigue or weakness.
Experts note that rock salt contains relatively less sodium compared to regular salt and is richer in minerals like potassium and magnesium. This makes it lighter on the digestive system. Many people mix rock salt into meals made from fruits, yogurt, sabudana, kuttu, or singhara flour during fasting to ensure they receive essential minerals.
Additionally, rock salt is considered to have a cooling effect. It is believed to help keep the body hydrated and facilitate digestion. It is also regarded as useful in reducing fatigue and weakness caused by prolonged periods without food during fasting. However, it is important to consume any salt in moderation.
Health experts also advise that pregnant women, the elderly, or individuals who find it challenging to remain hungry for long periods should maintain a balanced diet and consume rock salt as needed during fasting.
